I do love His gift, magnificent
A touch of paint divine

Kissed By Heaven

Heaven descends

Caresses your cheeks

Poses a kiss

On your weary brow

You smile

Life blooms

With a tight embrace

and few tears

Heaven holds your heart

Washes your feet

You smile

Life blooms

I Miss You

What! Spring still visits you, my sweetheart, despite all that pain?

Does he still yearn to give your wounded cheeks a kiss?

Does he still caress your velvet plaits with scent of roses and jasmine?

Do daffodils still bloom in your meadows, in spite of death-makers?

O, do poppies still grows yearning to touch the feet of your beloved,

Enchanted, as prophets adoration of Heaven?

This is My Palestine

I miss you sweetheart, I miss your embrace

Take me to you, embrace me, never let go

Shatter me under the beats of your heart,  let me divvy with your breath

Fade away   dissolve into nothingness

Eternal Love Story

376162_634722876557149_295443682_n

Once upon a velvet night … A Jerusalemite night

The moon approached the moon

Two moons embraced

Like, true lovers, they gazed and exchanged tenderness

11228518_10207072886413450_615343303161575462_n

The moon whispered to his beloved’s ear

Sweetheart, let me dry your tears

Your tears shook the Throne of the Most Sublime

Your dignified sighs shattered the cosmos

946021_216223151835321_35775858_n

Yesterday, my beloved

Epoch told us a story

About a Universe

Who fell in love with a moon

A never ending love story

Between Eternal and mortal, Infinite and finite

31618_506001709434415_284628689_n

Heaven and Earth entwined

Planets bowed down, and stars prostrated in awe

Between a rock and Paradise

A rope of light unfurled

68363_363362730416586_40859279_n

Here, galaxies kissed earth

Here, prophets prayed in adoration

Here, an oath… Here, a promise

Here, joy, bliss and delight

378868_374095109349126_835145121_n

Here, souls of martyrs flew above

Buoyant, to drumbeats below

Here, the chanting of angels

Following footsteps of the messenger

946699_663505147008392_292046288_n

Here, the sound of truth is loud and powerful

Here, falsehood is defeated

Here, darkness of oppression does not stand a  chance

Here, hearts are consoled, wounds are healed

Topography of my soul

When I was seven,
At gunpoint,
I was driven out of my land, Palestine
A Naksa, survivor, daughter of Nakba survivors
Eyes moist, gazing at the horizon
Fixated towards Jerusalem
Ever since
994296_607191465965399_1865253479_n
When I was seventeen,
My family departed Libya, moved away, as did I
Leaving all my friends behind
“I will not go through this again” I thought
“No more friends, no more love, no more gain
No more loss, no more separation, no more pain” I said to myself
999
At twenty seven,
A stranger in a strange land, London, UK
The chest of my beloved was ripped open
Valve replacement in his heart
Standing by his side in ICU
“I wish it was me under the surgeon’s knife”
“I could cope better, if I took your place”
Anguish, unbearable, legs turn jelly, I fell to the floor
broken_heart_by_starry_eyedkid-1_e1906ae0
At thirty seven,
Gasping for life, in a hospital bed in Whiston
With a fine thread, clutching onto hope
Wavering in and out of existence, for four years
Watching my children growing alone, playing alone
Sobbing at my baby’s daily questions:
“Are you feeling better, mama? Can you give me a bath?
Can you tell me a story? Can we play outside today?”
 “Does that grey colour in your hair mean  you’re going to die soon, mama?”

541711_202523819920731_158562039_n

At forty seven,
Grieving the sudden loss of my soulmate,
Burying my beloved in Amman graveyard
Frozen, flicking through my memories
Searching every corner of my mind
Digging my heart, carving the kernel of my soul
Maybe, just maybe, I could hear one of Khaled’s heartbeats!
Meet his shadow, touch his hand

Catch a whiff of his scent around

1235202_757176544298231_67634285_n
At fifty seven,
oops, not there yet !
* * *

NO… NO

Don’t get me wrong

I am not complaining, not at all
I am merely describing

The lowest points in time and space

Of the map of my journey, in the valleys of my soul

* * *
The rest is magic
Swaying hills, and gushing waterfalls
Great big mountains with high altitudes
Buoyant meadows and dancing rainbows,
Flowing rivers, pounding oceans, hymns of gratitude
Thank you Allah, Shukran ya wadoud

Human hands, made for giving

Caring hands never cause harm

For sore open wounds, balsam and balm

Tender, compassionate above being fair

Her name is Tune

Listen to Nagham reading her poems

.

Screen Shot 2014-09-17 at 23.22.38

Two awe-inspiring poems by child poet Nagham Sami El-Yaziji
(her names means Tune)

Translation (by Nahida Exiled)

Peace be with you, mercy and blessings
I am poet Nagham Sami El-Yazji
From Gaza,
But my native city is Yaffa
God willing, we will return to Yaffa

* * *

First poem (recited in Palestinian dialect)

I am eight

EIGHT years of bombing and destruction,

Fear and dispossession

I survived three wars

THREE wars

Each is more horrific than the previous

* * *

Is there a little girl, in this entire universe

who ever lived three wars, in such a brief age?

I was asleep, in the arms of mama and baba

Safe, tranquil and serene

Suddenly, they bombed our home

Our home is destroyed

My family were martyred

Mama died

Baba died

* * *
At night, who will embrace me when I hear the bombing?

Who will buy me Ramadan’s lantern?

Who will buy me Eid clothes?

* * *
I don’t want anything from you

I don’t want food, clothes or toys

All I want is safety, tranquility and peace

I want my family

I want my home, my beautiful memories

I want to sleep in serenity, wake up in serenity and play free

O world

O WORLD

Is that too much to ask?

Is that too much for me, a Palestinian child, to ask?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nagham reads her second poem in Classical arabic
I am Naghamu
I am a child
The nectar of my dreams infuses my lungs with life
Love runs in my veins
I embroider my tears in my heart
A dress of sorrow
Swathing me with light of dawn
I am a child
I am Naghamu
* * *
People say, my name is a tune
People say, I am a song, soft and delightful
They didn’t know that phosphorus bombs have ignited our calm nights
They didn’t know that the bombing has created my first revolution
The revolution of my exiled father
The revolution of my childless grandmother
The revolution of our budding childhood
The revolution of our traumatised home
The revolution of our usurped neighbourhood
The revolution of our parched blood
* * *
What is my name?
What is the meaning of my name?
The relevance of my name?
When a nightmare is crushing my lungs
Without food, without a home, without a name
Without hope, without love, without a dream
* * *
What is my sin?
What is my sin? answer me
I, what did I… do?
What did I do?
* * *
Did I commit a crime for loving this universe, O mama?
Is my crime that I fell in love with this universe for a moment, mama?
I don’t adore it any more
How can I adore it without mama, without Muna, without Huda, without Rami?
I am Naghamu
Take all this pain?”
1374204_756907607658458_715039462_n
Is it really cruel?
People say
What happened to you is so cruel… so unfair
To have to lose khaled in such an awful way
When you were so much in love
I say, yes it is very painful
But not at all cruel
Death is nothing but a gateway
Everything dies… Everyone dies
Why should I be the exception?
His journey ended before mine
That’s all
And soon I’ll follow
It’s only a matter of time
Before we are together again
We come to life
 Only for a while
Also… the law goes
The higher you fly up
The greater is your fall
The more intensely you enjoy your love
The more painful is your sorrow
This only fair
Some live and die
Without experiencing real love
And I’ve experienced all
It’s not cruel to give something back
And to feel more pain
Is not unfair
Stand still
Close your eyes
Hold your breath
Listen
 Can you hear her heart beating?
Be amazed… Be in awe!
One moment of madness
Would you forget me?
If I disappear from your life
You asked me once
Teasing you
I replied
With this memory of mine
There are no guarantees
I don’t trust it with any thing
You know
I might know people for years
But when I meet in the street
My mind goes blank
I know that I know them
But that’s as far as it goes
.
.
.
Now
All I want is
One moment of forgetfulness
One moment of insanity
One moment in which
I am
Not
Thinking
Of you
Feelings and Words
Trying to squeeze feelings into words
No act of justice at all
It distorts… disfigures
Belittles… demeans
A great offence without a doubt
To my shame and my disgrace
 I confess, I am to blame
Truly “Guilty” I declare
Defend me not I don’t deserve
For feelings can only be felt
So, when I write about my love
Don’t ever think I’m making sense
 No language can ever convey
The boundless, the eternal
Expression falls short by far
Feelings can only be felt
When I write about my sorrow
Don’t dare believe my words or verses
My speech is nothing but hollow hues
How can the infinite ever be defined
Feelings can only be felt
Truly “Guilty” I declare
Agape
When life becomes burdened with wickedness and cruelty,
when loss and confusion is written on every human face,
when people weep in misery and despair,
Climb up a hill or a mountain
eyes full of compassion
heart full of mercy
open your soul,
raise your hands up,
in wondrous agape
wholeheartedly
tightly
embrace
Only love grew
When I was a little girl
My home was a tree-trunk
On a white cloud
Up…up… in the sky
depositphotosq_5237551-House-cloud-and-chamomiles
In this world of mine
The sun shone forever
All seasons were spring
And love grew everywhere
Yesterday is gone and its tale told. today new seeds are growing
In gardens… on trees
In the streets
On roof tops
In the rivers
In people’s hearts
And on their tongues
Visitors to my world
Wondered how
And why
Hate didn’t grow
Hate couldn’t grow
stock3-photo-cute-little-girl-holding-a-red-heart-valentine-illustration-704719841
The secret was
In this world of mine
People could read
Each other’s minds
So, they came to understand
How others feel
What others mean
Why others do
And where others stand
In this beautiful world of mine
Only love grew
Just BE, anyway
When the sun shines every morning
It does not think what if someone objects to its heat
It would Just give its best, anyway
603334_10151166527097878_1450014786_n
When twilight falls in the evening
It does not care who would curse its darkness
It would just embrace all, anyway
544024_578315092188563_787889373_n
When Sky gates flung open to relinquish earth
It does not hesitate in case some passers by would get wet
It would just rain anyway
526907_560510923965306_1169999256_n
When you align yourself with the Most Sublime
You would not consider how people see you;
Would they mock you
Would they belittle you
Would they hurt you
Or would they even kill you
You’re constantly content in magnificent harmony
You would just BE, anyway
Raw
This poem is dedicated to my friend Genie (Palestine Rose)
When you write raw
You leave your heart exposed
Unmasked
Unprotected
It will carry many cuts and bruises
It might even bleed its life out
43ecf
I too,  write raw
Not to appease
Neither to please
And certainly not to hurt or cause harm
Not to praise or to be praised
Not to condemn or put anyone down
embroidery5
But to heal and ease the pain
Of an injured world
With which I fell madly in love
Long before the day I was born
50
I hear rivers and oceans weeping I go to pieces
I see the tears running down sky’s face,
I melt away, I go insane
I would peel off the kernel of my soul
I would crush my being to nothingness
I would dwindle and wither away
I would set my heart ablaze
To see a child smile
Take my heart
Take my heart
grind it down
Sprinkle the dust over this tormented world
Turn it to compost
Let it feed love-hungry souls
993300_10200291473913046_2251577_n
In the palm of my hand I hold my heart, tender and sore
With delight I give it away
Watch the blossoms budding around
As one child smiles again
Flower before your eyes
Bright and colourful
Around your shoulders
May your kind actions
Swathe you with love
Warm and serene
May your nice words
Blossom poppies and lilies
Startling and sublime
People with Green Hearts
Arabic poem,
Author شهرزاد الخليج
Translated and illustrated by Nahida Exiled Palestinian
People with green hearts
The colour of trees is the colour of their hearts
Their dreams… water pure
 Their imagination… sky wide
 They are capable of infinite forgiveness
Have the ability to bathe in optimism
 And to wash themselves in dreams to the very last drop
 People with green hearts
 Don’t ever expect to be stabbed from the back
By a hand that once shook theirs
 Their days and seasons are works of art painted with hope
 They don’t learn easily from their mistakes
 Instead, they keep repeating them like a child’s bad habits
 They offer hearts around them infinite trust
They’re incapable of seeing the colour black in existence
 People with green hearts
Come intimately near to those who pass them by in life,
So much so that they are glued to them
They cling to the minute details
Ever trusting of those around
 Creative in finding excuses to the faults of others
 People with green hearts
Cling onto beginnings like mad
Reject endings fiercely
They can’t comprehend separation
They trick reality with a dream
The dream with an illusion
On the map of hope, they occupy vast areas
People with green hearts
 Don’t recognise mistrust or deception
Nor do they cause others to taste portrayal
They start with purity
 And end up with faithfulness
 Longing steals much of their time
 They keep loyal to their tales until death
Yesterday has immense reverence in their lives
 People with green hearts
 Play the role of peace doves
 Spreading love on earth
Help in building abodes of joy
They hasten to mend the broken hearts
 And talk with the voice of affection
About love and dreams
They make you feel that it’s them
Who invented the colour “white” in this universe
 People with green hearts
Hold fast to childhood, despite the passing of years
Their hearts forever young
Their souls never grow old, nor become polluted
Their faces reflects babyhood innocence
Their eyes mirror truthfully their essence
They’re not good at hiding, or deceiving
And fail miserably in wearing masks
 People with green hearts
 Never fail you when you need them
 They are the first to cover your needs
 When feeling overwhelmed;
They are the first thing that you lay your eyes upon
The first who come to your rescue when drowned in sorrow
When you are suffocated they’d give you their breath
They’d make their lives a life ring thrown to you
 People with green hearts
 When they love, they love passionately
When they are faithful, they are faithful passionately
 When they get a shock, the get a shock passionately
 And when they are broken, they are broken passionately
 When they give, they give passionately
And when they cry, they cry passionately
 If you find yourself embraced
 By one of those with green hearts
Cling onto them… passionately
 As they are a rare treasure
 In times of colour-shifting hearts
World, I Love You
In times of great upheaval and when darkness prevails, it is the remembrance of what is important that will keep us going.
Hope thrives by sustaining and fostering our humanity, amidst the gloomy hours of turbulence and anguish.
.
The other day
I looked into your eyes
.
.
I saw Heaven
.
.
My heart smiled
Fluttered its wings
and flew away
.
.
Looking above, I saw my heart growing
.
.
Growing… growing
Overflowing
Pouring out love
Embracing All
.
.
Engulfed
Trees swayed in jubilation
.
.
Hills and mountains imbibed within
.
 .
Flowers and meadows twirled with elation
.
 .
Soil and sand trembled of devotion
.
 .
 Babies, dolphins, birds and butterflies
with beautiful grins, bounced around
.
.
.
With a child’s heart
 Playing hide and seek
Rivers and oceans pounded with joy
.
.
 Earth, planets, galaxies and stars
Danced while nesting inside
.
 .
My heart contained
All there is
.
 .
Besotted, swept off my feet
I swirled with joy
.
.
In disbelief, I looked at me . . . shrinking
.
.
Rose Petals . . . scattered
A speck of dust . . . faded away
 I am gone
.
What Really Matters!
When all gets dark
And life loses its colours
When evil tightens the grip
And the wicked leads the way
When fall falls before its time
and frost grows around
When your heart is torn and worn,
and you feel like throwing it away
Don’t give up, just wait a little while,
Turn your back
Close your eyes and
Remember what you have forgotten
Try to find if you’ve lost,
Apologize if you’ve hurt,
Forgive if you have been hurt,
Caress if you’ve been deprived,
Pursue, if you have dream
Share if you’ve been bereft,
Giggle if you’ve been aggrieved,
Embrace if you’ve been shun,
Give if you’ve been denied,
Excel if you’ve been scorned,
Feed if you’ve tasted hunger
Rejoice if you’ve felt somber
Accompany those who know
Hold on tight to those you love,
Cherish those who care for you,
Because life is too short
and it is full of wonder
Only in Palestine
In Palestine, good and evil assemble
In stark contrast
An epitome of creation
In Palestine, heroism meets malice head on
No concealment, no pretence
In Palestine, kindness confronts bitterness
 Mercy grows defiant
 “Never forget and never forgive” mantra is brought to shame
In Palestine, walls all around
Yet, sitting on the fence is no longer an option
One must choose a camp
In Palestine, from prophetic schools saints and angels graduate
Yet, out of sorcery spells fiends and devils are frothed into being
In Palestine, hatred is a chain, millennia old
Pulling to Hell of depravity
Beasts who promote
In Palestine, endurance is a meadow, blossoming through parched soil
Painting the horizon
 Tears of elation and whispers of devotion
In Palestine, tenderness is a melody, sung by Gaza shores
Growing in abundance, filling hearts and minds
Dancing at twilight, healing girls and boys
In Palestine, love is a rainbow, shimmering above
Lifting to Heavenly splendour
Sublime nostalgic souls
In Palestine, faith is ocean deep
Patience knows no boundaries
Sincerity soft tactile and hope… sky-wide
In Palestine, sinners are repentant
The pious clothed in modesty and lovers intertwined
In Palestine, sisters made queens, brothers are protectors
Children are adored, fathers held up high
but under mothers’ feet Paradise is laid down
In Palestine, the hungry is fed, the lonely is embraced
The lost will be guided and the searching will find
When you are a Palestinian
A poem by Shadi Abdul-Kareem
Translation by Nahida Exiled Palestinian
When you are a Palestinian
You would need daily practice of hiding tears
And swallowing huge chunk of wishes
 Overflowing from your reality
 In front of which you stand flabbergasted
Wondering who’d find the genie’s lamp
That would bring back your olive tree,
the straw tray and the sea fragrance?
When you are a Palestinian
You wouldn’t dare to broaden your smile
The ghosts of Alaqsa would encircle you
And the blood of Saladin which runs in your veins
Would remind you whenever you attempt to smile
That your smile is a betrayal… punishable by history
When you are a Palestinian
You cannot dream solo
There is always someone with you
Rather taking control
And whilst others dream of wealth, power, wife, children
Your dream is
A nap beneath an orange tree in Haifa
A cup of coffee by the shore of Tabareya
A prayer that rises up to heaven
 Following the footsteps of the beloved
When you are a Palestinian
You’d live in a state of unceasing absence of normal life
 No wakefulness… no sleep
No work… no rest
No awareness… no unconsciousness
Without the remembrance of Palestine;
How was Palestine!
What became of Palestine!
And what will happen to Palestine?
When you are a Palestinian
You would live a stranger in your homeland
And a stranger outside your homeland
 You would provoke all kinds of feelings
You’d be an instigator of pity, some times
An instigator of sadness, some times
An instigator of curiosity, some times
An instigator of admiration, many times
When you are a Palestinian
You’d work tirelessly
Promoting a redundant commodity
Called DIGNITY
No longer in circulation
Since new dictionaries of morality have been invented
When you are a Palestinian
 You will unavoidably get an illness called melancholy
You will infect all those who know you
 And those who gaze at the caged tears in your eyes
And those who’d listen to the howl of mosques, churches and stones in your voice
When you are a Palestinian
You would enjoy an extraordinary memory
You’d remember the number of sand grains under the sea
 The voice of every muezzin
The laughter of every child
You’d remember the colour of dawn
The flavour of sleep
 The scent of rain
You’d also remember those black nights
The voices of their monsters and their moves
You would remember the smell of death mixed with gunfire
You’d remember the wailing of widows
 And the moaning of little girls
You’d remember your footsteps towards the oblivion
Every tear, and over which soil granule it fell
When you are a Palestinian
You’d discover the value of numbers
You’d fall in love with them
Or hate them
A strong bond will anchor you
Since your name became a number
Your history, a number
Your home address, a number
Your lost-family members, a number
Those who died, who imprisoned, who were torn to pieces… numbers
The days you squandered -or squandered by- in refugee camps… a number
Your dreams and failed prophecies of the day of your return… a number
 You’d appreciate indeed the value of numbers
You’d be filled with gratitude to those who invented numbers
Otherwise your life would’ve been lifeless, and numberless
When you are a Palestinian
You’d live in chronic yearning to a past you never knew
And to future you would never know
When you are a Palestinian
Words of love would not matter to you
Nor the stock market
 Nor festival celebrations here and there
 It would not matter to you if nights became endless
Or if days disappeared forever
 It would not matter to you if the year is twelve months
Or twelve watermelons
It would not matter to you if people ascended to the moon
Or if the moon descended to them
It would not matter to you if a party loses the election and another wins
It would not matter to you if a country is triumphant and another defeated
All what matters to you is that PALESTINE WAS STOLEN
And IT MUST BE OBTAINED BACK
When you are a Palestinian
You would abruptly stop talking
 And leave the story unfinished
The poem without an ending
As most likely the ideas in your head would become overcrowded
So much so that they’d run over each other
And you’d have to stop writing or talking immediately
To attend the funeral of those thoughts which have been squashed
And died before even being born
Therefore
I will cut short my speech
Leave to give my condolences in exile
 Where thoughts pass away
Because they refuse to survive
